A white van sat just outside the parks gates, an unrecognisable figure hiding behind its tinted windows. He held up his binoculars, watching a young couple sitting on a bench, staring into each others eyes. "Their relationship is about to get a hell of a lot different" he said into a walkie-talkie. "GO!"
Still watching through the binocular lenses, he grinned as two burly men dived on the couple, injecting them with syrettes full of tranquilizer. He watched the men shove the lifeless bodies into sacks, and throw them over their shoulders. Within seconds the sacks and the men were in the back of the van, and the vehicle tore off to an unknown destination.
My eyes slowly adjusted to the light from the tiny bulb on the ceiling, rubbing my aching arm with my hand. I looked around the tiny, dirty room, trying to figure out what happened. I dug into the recesses of my mind, and tried to remember the last thing that happened. Then it hit me. I was sitting on a park bench, with my girlfriend Molly. That was it. Suddenly two burly men busted through the door, followed by a wiry old man with a small patch of white hair resting on top of his barren, wrinkly head.
"Feeling better?" the old man said, in a thick French accent.
I met his question with silence, giving him a dirty look.
"No? Maybe this will help" he said, producing a needle and shoving it into my arm.
I yelped in pain, and they left as if they had more important things to do.
I sat there, confused, and just waited.
The old man powered down the corridor, talking to the burly men.
"The serum should kick in in about 10 minutes, have you set the cameras up?"
One of the burly men grunted in reply.
"I'll take that as a yes" the old man muttered, quickly turning a corner. "Make sure it is all working well, I want this to be good".
The men grunted again this time, in unison. "Oh, and also" he said, spinning around to look them in the eyes, "Put them together, this one could get interesting"
I snapped back into consciousness when the door opened, caught by surprise when a body was thrown in. The door slammed shut, and I moved closer. "Molly!" I exclaimed, as soon as I saw her golden hair and her crystal blue eyes. "Are you ok?"
Tears were streaming from her eyes, answering my question with a shake of her head. I felt a deep pang in my heart, hurt to see her so upset. "Did they inject you too?" I asked, remembering the thick needle they shoved into my arm.
She nodded.
I clutched her to my chest, her tears seeping through my shirt. I stroked her matted golden hair, when I noticed two bumps sticking out the top of her head. I brushed the hair aside, revealing slowly growing canine-like ears. The back of the ears were red, and the insides were white.
I was shocked. I gave the ears a little tug, and she cried more.
"Sorry" I whispered into one of her new ears. I was awash with panic, not knowing what to do. I looked down, seeing a bushy red tail tipped with white sticking out from below her shirt. What the hell was happening? That was when I noticed my hands. They were no longer hands. My fingers had shrunk, as had my hand, which was now covered in black fur. My hands were now paws.
She had stopped crying, and she went to wipe the tears away with the back of her hand, and she screamed when she felt the soft fur touch her face. "W-w-what's happening?" she stuttered. She looked up at me with her crystal blue eyes, tears pouring out and seeping into the orange fur. Fur? I nearly squealed. Her nose was now a small black stump, and it had placed itself further away from the rest of her now small, furry face.
Now she squealed, and now I could see my furry red nose in front of my face. It hit me, the serum the men had given us was altering our DNA, and speeding up the cell renewal. And now we were turning into red foxes.
Now we were fox-sized, our baggy clothes draped over our now much smaller bodies. The door squeaked open, and I told Molly to run, but only a little yap came out. I raced for the door, and she followed suit. We squeezed through the tiny gap, and raced down the corridor as fast as our little furry black legs would take us. The men tried to dive on us, but we just darted out of the way, and we raced through a conveniently open door. We kept running, and we made it deep into a dark forest, seemingly massive trees towering over us. I found a small hole big enough for the two of us, and we bedded down for the night, curled into each other to try and escape the bitter cold of the night.
